Presentation of Our Lord & Candlemas

Presentation of Our Lord and Candlemas is a Christian holiday celebrated annually on February 2. It celebrates three occasions: the Virgin Mary’s purification according to the Law; the ransom offering of Jesus as their firstborn (Jesus’ presentation and first entry into the Temple); and most importantly, the meetings and revelations of Simeon and Anna with the Holy Family. At Jesus’ presentation at the Temple, Simeon meets the infant Jesus and his parents calling him “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32). Because of this interaction, light is a major theme of this service and began to include the blessing of candles used to light homes and worship spaces for the coming year. You are invited to bring a candle or candles from home to be a part of this blessing. Additionally, a tradition developed in some European countries to serve crepes as part of the celebrations so, we will have a breakfast themed pot luck luncheon here at St. Peter’s immediately following worship.
